You remember the wishbone. It sat drying on the windowsill for days after the turkey was carved, and then, finally, after dessert, someone held it out to you. Two pinkies, one quick pull, a crack, and a cheer from whoever got the bigger half. It's one of the first Thanksgiving traditions anyone teaches a child, and one nobody really grows out of.

The custom is old. It's often traced back to the ancient Etruscans of Italy, who treated a bird's collarbone as a charm for luck, and it travelled through the Romans to England. The English gave it a lovely name: the merrythought. Breaking it was a small ritual of hope, and it came to America with the people who sat down at those early harvest tables.

The Merrythought digital Thanksgiving invitation turns that moment into the way your guests open your invite. A golden wishbone waits on a dark, candlelit screen with the words "make a wish". Your guest pulls it apart with a finger, it snaps with a soft crack and a warm chime, and the half left in their hand glows. They always get the lucky break. Then the camera flies into the light and the invitation moves forward like a film, one scene at a time: your name in gold script, the date set between two thin rules, embers drifting up through the glow. Each scene zooms past as your guest scrolls, and the next rises out of the dark and settles in the center. In one of them, three cards lie face-down. Tap one and it turns over to show a question you'll ask around the table this year, like "who made this year a little lighter for you?" A small candle marks dinner time and the address, and a quiet note tells everyone what to bring.

It says that you care about more than the food. Plenty of families go around the table saying what they're thankful for, and this invite gets everyone thinking about their answer days before they sit down. Guests turn the cards over, then text you to ask whether they really have to answer number two. They do.

It suits a family dinner with the good candles out, and it suits a Friendsgiving in a small apartment just as well. Save the real wishbone for after the pie.

What the invite does

The Merrythought digital Thanksgiving invitation opens from one link on any phone, so it drops straight into the family group chat, a text or an email.

  • An opening guests play with. They pull the wishbone apart to open the invitation. There's also a "tap to open" button for anyone who'd rather not drag.
  • Gratitude cards. Write your own three "around the table" questions. Guests tap to turn each card.
  • RSVP and map. Replies come back to you in a tap, and the address opens in maps.
  • Sound that follows your mute button. The snap and card-turn sounds play only after a guest taps, and your site's mute/unmute button controls them, along with any background music you add.
Every line is yours to change, from the wish on the first screen to the sign-off.
