Funny Wedding Hashtags: 90 Punny Ideas That Aren't Secondhand Cringe

Page Navigation

Hot take: most "funny" wedding hashtags aren't funny. They're a pun wearing a party hat, printed on acrylic, being read politely by 140 people who will never type it. The ones that actually work have something specific in them — your names, your nine-year engagement, the app you met on — and they're funny about you, not about marriage in general.

Heads up: some links in this post are Amazon affiliate links — if you buy through them, Eventic earns a small commission at no extra cost to you.

So here are 90 of them, sorted by the kind of couple you are. Steal freely.

The one rule

A funny wedding hashtag has to survive being read by your mother-in-law, typed by your least online uncle, and screenshotted by your group chat. That's a narrow gap and most jokes don't fit through it.

Quick test: the joke should be on the two of you. #TookThemLongEnough is funny because you took a long time. Jokes about marriage being a life sentence give guests the ick and they've been done a thousand times since 2011. Pick the first kind.

If your surname isn't cooperating, the full A–Z of last-name hashtag structures has a closer match than you'd think — and a plan B for the names that genuinely don't pun.

#MutualsToMarried · #TheAlgorithmChoseUs · #CtrlAltCommit · #TwoPlayerModeForever · #PermanentPlusOne · #LoadingForeverPleaseWait · #NoTakebacksNoUndo · #SquadUpdateMarried · #WeMetOnAnAppAndSurvived · #TheGroupChatDidThis

#MutualsToMarried is the one I'd actually use. It's specific, it's current, and it tells a story in two words. No notes.

Three jokes to skip

Prison and ball-and-chain jokes. #GameOverForHim, #TheFinalCountdown, anything implying one of you is being sentenced. It's been done since Facebook had a poke button, and half the room reads it as a genuine complaint.

Anything about an ex. Obviously. And yet.

Puns nobody can spell. If the joke depends on a homophone — Reid/ready, Wynn/win — someone will type the wrong one and their photos land in a stranger's tag. It's still worth doing if the pun is great, but pick the spelling and put it on every sign in large letters.

How to know if yours is actually funny

Say it out loud in a normal voice. Not in your head — out loud. Puns that read well often collapse when spoken, and your MC is going to say this into a microphone.

Then send your top three to the group chat with no context. Whichever one gets a reaction in under a minute is the one. If the reply is "wait, what does it mean," it's dead — a wedding hashtag has about one second to land before someone's thumb keeps scrolling.

Then check nobody's already using it, because funny hashtags are the most likely to be taken. #PourDecisions has been going strong since roughly 2014. Running the ninety-second check across Instagram and TikTok will save you from printing a sign that points at somebody else's bachelorette party. Feeding your names into a hashtag generator also helps you find the less obvious pun — the one 400 other couples haven't already used.

Worth knowing while you're deciding: hashtags don't push your posts to strangers the way they once did. Instagram dropped the ability to follow hashtags at the end of 2024 and now recommends only a handful of tags per post. Your hashtag is a folder, not a billboard — which is freeing, actually. It means you can pick the funny one without worrying about "reach."

Where the funny one goes

Not on the formal invitation. It goes on the save the date, the website, the bar sign, and the photo booth — the full placement list is here, and the bar is where it earns its keep.

If you're doing a photo corner, a set of wedding photo booth props plus the hashtag on a card in frame will do more for your tag than any amount of signage — people post the photo they think is funny, and props make more of those.

Make the pun readable, or it isn't a pun

A joke that needs a second look isn't landing on a sign that people walk past. Two fixes, both free.

Capitalise every word — #PourDecisionsForever, never #pourdecisionsforever. Lowercase turns a three-word pun into one long noise, and it's the difference between a guest getting the joke instantly and squinting.

And keep it under about 22 characters. Long puns die on phones. #StillArguingAboutTheSeatingChart is genuinely funny and completely unusable; #StillArguing does the same job in a third of the taps. When you're torn between the funnier version and the shorter version, take the shorter one — the funny one nobody types collects zero photos.

Pick the one your friends repeated back to you. That's the test that matters — a hashtag lives or dies on whether people can remember it after one drink.

On a hand-lettered sign at the bar, no. On the ceremony program next to your officiant's name, a bit. Match the placement to the tone.
Fine — the ones who get it will use it hardest, and the rest will copy them.
