Last-name wedding hashtags come from three moves — find a word hiding inside the name (#SilvaLining), rhyme it with a familiar phrase (#MehtaToBe), or fuse both surnames into one word (#ThePhamilyOkafor). Below is a worked A–Z with real examples for the most common surnames, plus what to do when yours refuses to cooperate. Rough rule: if nothing lands in ninety seconds of trying, your surname is a date-anchor surname and that's completely fine.
Prefer to build one from scratch rather than browse? The full three-round method takes about ten minutes. This page is for when you'd rather skim a list and steal something.
Some surnames were born for this. Owens, Nguyen, Mehta — they practically write the hashtag themselves. And then there's Yarborough, which has never rhymed with anything in its life and isn't about to start for your wedding.
The three moves that make a last-name hashtag work
1. The hidden word. Look inside the surname for a real word or near-word. Silva has silver. Pham has family. Jain has joined. This produces the best results and takes the longest to spot — read your surname out loud slowly and listen for what it nearly says.
2. The phrase rhyme. Swap your surname into a phrase everyone already knows. #KhanYouBelieveIt. #MoralesOfTheStory. #GoodGillHunting. High success rate, and the ones that land get quoted back to you for years.
3. The merge. Fuse both surnames. Okafor + Bell becomes #TheOkabells. Works when the sounds meet cleanly and produces something unpronounceable when they don't, so say it aloud before you fall in love with it.
A–Z: last-name wedding hashtag ideas
Steal these directly or use them as a template for your own name. Capitalise every word — it's not required, but #SmithHappens reads and #smithhappens doesn't.

When your surname flat-out refuses
Some names don't pun. Yarborough, Kowalczyk, Sutherland — you can sit with them for three weeks and get nowhere, and there's no prize for persistence.
Four escape routes, all perfectly respectable:
- Use first names instead. #PriyaAndDaniel2026. Warmer than the surname version, and it always works.
- Anchor to the date. #Kowalczyk2026. Never clever, never wrong, always available.
- Use the place. #SutherlandsInSantorini.
- Go joke-first and abandon the surname entirely. Plenty of the best hashtags are about the couple rather than the spelling, and they don't need your name to cooperate at all.
And if you'd rather have a machine grind through the pun and merge patterns for you, our wedding hashtag generator will do a few hundred permutations of your names in a couple of seconds. It won't find your inside joke, but it's very good at spotting the hidden word you've been looking straight past.
Two surnames, one hashtag
If you're both keeping your names — increasingly the norm — you've got more options, not fewer:
- Merge them: Okafor + Bell → #TheOkabells
- Pun on the better one: whichever surname is more cooperative wins. This is not a fairness issue, it's a phonetics issue.
- Use both plainly: #BellMeetsOkafor, #OkaforPlusBell
- Skip surnames entirely: first names and the year
Hyphenated? Pun on one half. #MarriedAMontgomery works fine even if the legal name is Montgomery-Reyes.
One last thing: whatever you pick, text it to the friend who is most likely to make fun of it. Better to hear the joke now than to read it on an acrylic sign for six hours.

Not to the platform — #SilvaLining and #silvalining go to the same place. It matters enormously to human readability, and it's what stops the accidental-second-word problem. Always capitalise each word.
Common surnames get reused constantly. Add the year, or pick the second option in your row. Check before printing — running the availability check properly takes about two minutes and saves a reprint.
Whichever you'll be using socially. If one of you is changing names, the new surname is usually the more meaningful pick — it's the first public outing for it.
