How much candy do you need per trick-or-treater?

Budget 2 pieces of candy per trick-or-treater, plus a 15% buffer, then convert that to bags using the count printed on the bag you're buying. The harder part isn't the pieces-per-child figure — it's the number of children, and that number can vary by a factor of ten between two houses three streets apart. A quiet cul-de-sac might see a dozen kids all evening; a known "candy street" that people drive to from other neighbourhoods can see well over a hundred in the same window. Guessing your own street's number from a generic national average is the single biggest reason hosts either run out early or end up with three unopened bags in the pantry come November.

Traffic is also heavily front-loaded. Most trick-or-treating happens in the three hours between about 5:30pm and 8:30pm, with the first hour after dusk typically the busiest as families with younger children go out earliest and head home before it gets too late or too cold. If you're only planning to answer the door for an hour or two, put that hour where the actual rush is rather than assuming it spreads evenly across the whole evening — a house that opens at 5:30 and closes at 7 will see meaningfully more kids per hour than one open from 6:30 to 9.

How much candy for a Halloween party?

Party candy splits into two categories that behave completely differently, and mixing them up is the most common way hosts under-buy. The first is bowl candy — what's sitting out for guests to graze on during the party itself. This doesn't scale linearly with how long the party runs, because consumption plateaus: a five-hour party doesn't produce five hours of continuous eating, since kids get distracted by games and adults get distracted by conversation. The calculator above caps bowl consumption per person for exactly this reason, rather than just multiplying an hourly rate by however long your party lasts.

The second category is take-home treat bags, and this is the one people forget to budget for. If you're sending each child home with a filled bag, that candy doesn't get eaten at the party at all — it's a separate, fixed quantity per child that gets added on top of the bowl candy, and for a party with a decent-sized guest list it's often close to half the total candy you need to buy. How the calculator works

For trick-or-treaters: expected children is your street traffic rate (in children per hour) multiplied by the hours you'll be answering the door, rounded to a whole number. That gets multiplied by your pieces-per-child figure, then by 1.15 for the buffer, and rounded up — never down — to a whole piece. Pieces divided by however many pieces come in a bag, rounded up, gives you the bag count, and bags times price per bag gives you the approximate spend.

The 15% buffer is there on purpose, and it's asymmetric by design: the two ways this calculation can be wrong don't cost the same. Buy too little and you run out mid-evening, which in practice means turning off the porch light and leaving trick-or-treaters disappointed on your own doorstep — a bad outcome that happens at the worst possible time, with no way to fix it that night. Buy a bit too much and the extra wrapped candy sits in a cupboard for months, which costs you a small amount of money and nothing else. Given that asymmetry, rounding every step up rather than down, and padding the middle step by 15%, is the correct way to model it — not an overcautious one.

For a Halloween party, bowl candy for kids and adults is modelled as an hourly rate with a hard per-person ceiling — kids at roughly 3 pieces/hour capped at 12 pieces each, adults at roughly 1.5 pieces/hour capped at 8 pieces each — so a longer party asks for more candy up to a point, then stops asking for more. Take-home treat bags are added on top at whatever pieces-per-bag figure you set, uncapped, since that's a fixed packing decision rather than something that plateaus with time.

Six ways people get the candy count wrong

A handful of mistakes account for most of the "ran out at 7:45" or "bought way too much" stories:

  • Guessing street traffic from a national average. The gap between a quiet street and a well-known busy one is roughly tenfold — a single flat "candy per house" number can't capture that, which is why this calculator asks you to describe your street rather than pick a number.
  • Ignoring how front-loaded the rush is. The 5:30-8:30pm window carries almost all the traffic, and the first hour after dusk is usually the busiest single hour of the night. Planning to stay open for the same total hours but starting late misses the real peak.
  • Buying exactly the calculated amount with no buffer. Given that running dry is the costly failure and leftover candy is a cheap one, planning to the exact expected number rather than padding it is backwards.
  • Treating a party's candy needs like trick-or-treating. Bowl candy at a party plateaus with time; it doesn't scale the same way street traffic does over hours.
  • Forgetting take-home treat bags entirely. They're often close to half a party's total candy need, and they're easy to leave out of a mental estimate because nobody's eating them in the room.
  • Not having a non-food option for allergies. A small bowl of stickers, glow sticks, or small toys — ideally signalled with a teal pumpkin on your porch, the recognised symbol of the Teal Pumpkin Project — means kids with food allergies still get something at your door instead of nothing.
