Save the Date Wording: 60 Examples for Formal, Casual, Funny and Destination Weddings

Quick answer: every save the date needs four lines: your names, the date, the city and "invitation to follow." The simplest version is "Save the date · Emma & Jordan · June 12, 2027 · Charleston, SC · Formal invitation to follow." Below are 60 examples by style, plus short versions sized for a text message.

Save the date wording is easier than invitation wording because it says less. There's no ceremony time, no host line, no RSVP card. You only have to get four facts across, and then you can let your personality show in the rest. This is one part of our bigger guide to save the date ideas, which covers timing and etiquette.

Whatever style you choose, check these four boxes:

  1. Your names
  2. The date
  3. The city and state, or country
  4. "Invitation to follow"

Wording tips that prevent awkward questions

  • Names on the envelope or message are the guest list. If kids are invited, name them. "The Smith Family" invites everyone at that address.
  • Don't put the time on it. Times change. The invitation will have it.
  • Use the city, not the venue, if anything might move. Zola notes the venue name isn't essential on a save the date.
  • Always say "invitation to follow." Otherwise some guests will think the save the date is the invitation.
  • Match the tone to the wedding. A black-tie ballroom and a barbecue need different wording.

Not sure who gets one? Read the save the date etiquette rules before you hit send. For the invitation itself, see our full wedding invitation wording guide.
