When to Send Thanksgiving Invitations in 2026 (and When to Remind People)

At a glance

Quick answer: send Thanksgiving invitations two to three weeks before Thursday, November 26, 2026, so between November 5 and 12. If guests are traveling, send them four to six weeks ahead. Set the RSVP deadline a week before (November 19) and send a reminder three days out.

Thanksgiving is a holiday everyone already knows the date of, which tempts hosts to send the invite late. That's a mistake. People make plans early: who they're visiting, which side of the family, whether they're doing two dinners. The invitation is how you get on the calendar first. This is part of our complete Thanksgiving invitations guide.

Behind schedule? A quick message today beats a beautiful invitation next week. Our Thanksgiving invitation wording has short text versions you can send in a minute.

Why two to three weeks?

  • Families negotiate early. Many couples alternate whose family they see. Early invites settle it before it becomes a debate.
  • Hosts need the headcount. The turkey size, chairs and potluck plan all depend on it.
  • Menus get planned early. Chicory's 2026 holiday survey found 64% of people start planning holiday menus two or more weeks ahead.
  • Gatherings are getting bigger. CivicScience found 29% of people celebrating plan a large gathering this year, up from 24%.

More than six weeks ahead is usually too early for a local dinner. People forget, and plans shift.

When guests are traveling

Thanksgiving week is one of the busiest travel weeks of the year, so guests flying or driving in need more notice. Send the invitation four to six weeks ahead, include the full schedule if it's more than one meal, and tell them where they're sleeping. A short follow-up two weeks before with arrival times helps everyone.

Setting the RSVP deadline

Ask for replies one week before Thanksgiving. That gives you time to buy the turkey, borrow chairs and fill any gaps in the potluck. For Thursday, November 26, that's Thursday, November 19.

Some people never reply. Our holiday party RSVP guide has wording that gets a firm yes or no.

The reminder that saves the day

Send one reminder three days before with the essentials: the address, parking, arrival time, dinner time and what they're bringing. It's also the moment to share anything new, like "we're eating at 4 sharp because of the football."

  • "See you Thursday! Doors at 2, turkey at 4. Street parking is easiest on Maple."
  • "Two days to go! Quick reminder you're on dessert duty."
  • "Thanksgiving's almost here. Here's the address again, and a reminder we're asking everyone one question at dinner."

What if it's already too late?

It isn't, quite. If Thanksgiving is less than a week away, skip the formal invite and send a warm, direct message today: "We're doing Thanksgiving at ours on Thursday at 3. We'd love you to come. Can you let us know by Monday?" People appreciate being asked even at short notice, and many still have open plans, especially for dessert. Offer a later "pie time" for anyone already committed to another dinner. For close family, a phone call is even better than a text.

For Friendsgiving, a short-notice invite is completely normal. Pick a date at least five days out so people can shop for their dish.

When Thanksgiving is more than one meal

Some families make a long weekend of it: arrivals Wednesday, dinner Thursday, leftovers and a walk on Friday. If that's you, send the invitation four to six weeks ahead and include the whole schedule, not just the dinner. Guests need to know which nights they're staying, whether there's a Friday breakfast and when you expect them to head home.

DayWhat to tell guests
WednesdayArrival time, where they're sleeping, whether there's dinner
ThursdayArrival time for the meal, dinner time, what to bring
FridayBreakfast, leftovers lunch, any outing
SaturdayCheckout time, if you need the beds back

A digital invitation with a schedule section keeps all of this in one place, so nobody has to scroll back through a week of group chat to find out when breakfast is.

A sample invitation and reminder, start to finish

Here's how the messages for a simple local Thanksgiving might look across the whole timeline, so you can copy the rhythm as well as the words:

  • November 9, the invitation: "Thanksgiving at ours this year! Thursday, November 26. Doors at 2, turkey at 4. We've got the main; bring a side or dessert if you'd like. Please reply by the 19th."
  • November 19, the gentle nudge: "Doing the turkey order today. Are you in for Thursday?"
  • November 23, the reminder: "See you Thursday! Parking's easiest on Maple. You're on sweet potatoes, thank you!"
  • November 26, the morning text: "Turkey's in. See you at 2!"

Four short messages, and nobody has to ask what time dinner is.

A digital invitation makes the timing easy: send one link, watch the RSVPs arrive, and re-share the same link as the reminder. The Long Table is a calm, minimal Thanksgiving design with the menu and potluck note built in. If you want guests to talk about the invite itself, Merrythought opens with a wishbone they pull apart.
