Engagement Invitation Messages for WhatsApp: 35 Samples in Hindi and English

Page Navigation

Hot take: the roka invite is harder to write than the wedding invite.

The wedding has a template. Everyone's seen a thousand of them. But roka? Half your guest list isn't sure what a roka is, the other half thinks it's the engagement, and you're sending it out on eleven days' notice because that's when the pandit found a time. Meanwhile your mother wants it to sound respectful and your friends will roast you if it sounds like a bank notification.

Below: 35 messages, split by function and by who's receiving them. All copy-paste, all sized to fit one phone screen without a "Read more" tap.

Roka vs sagai vs engagement — get this right first

Not pedantry. Using the wrong word means guests turn up expecting the wrong thing.

FunctionWhat actually happensTypical sizeNotice given
RokaFamilies formally agree; often just close relatives, sometimes a tilak20–60 people7–14 days
Sagai / MangniRing exchange, sometimes combined with roka50–1502–3 weeks
Engagement partyWestern-style, ring already done, celebration only60–2003–4 weeks
TilakGroom's side ceremony, more common in UP/Bihar30–1001–2 weeks

If your function is a roka that's really a sagai that's basically a party — which, let's be honest, is most of them — pick the word the elders in your family use and stay consistent across every message. Switching between "roka" and "engagement" in different messages is how you end up with people asking whether there are two functions.

Hindi and Devanagari versions

These read far better in Hindi than any translated version does. Paste as-is.

The short-notice problem, and how to word around it

Roka dates get fixed fast, and 2026 has made it worse. Chaturmas blocked the entire August–October stretch, and the season only reopens at Dev Uthani Ekadashi in late November — published panchangs put it on the 20th or 21st, and only eleven vivah muhurats remain in the whole year after that. Families racing to slot a roka before the wedding are working with a genuinely tight calendar, and everyone knows it.

Which means: don't apologise for short notice, just be explicit about it.

Short notice, we know — the date got fixed only yesterday. 🙏 Roka: Meera & Aditya, Saturday 12 September, 11 AM 24 Green Park Extension, New Delhi Please try to make it. It would mean a lot to both families.

That reads better than three lines of "sorry for the inconvenience." Say it once, move on.

Short notice also means the shopping happens in about four days, so two things are worth ordering the moment the date is fixed rather than the night before. A decorative ring platter — every single photo of the exchange has this in frame, and a plain steel plate from the kitchen is the thing families regret in the album. And a roka backdrop and decoration kit if the function is at home, since house roka photos live or die on whether there's one clean wall to stand against.

If the roka is at a banquet hall, skip both — the decorator handles it and you'll have bought a platter for nothing.

What to send to whom — the four-list rule

Before you send anything, split the guest list four ways. Four messages total, not one:

  1. Elders and family seniors — formal version, sent individually, never in a broadcast
  2. Extended family — formal version, broadcast is fine
  3. Friends — casual version, group or broadcast
  4. Colleagues and neighbours — formal-lite, no emojis beyond one

One warning worth repeating: broadcast messages only reach people who have your number saved. Your father's cousin who's never texted you? He won't receive it, and WhatsApp won't tell you. This trips up more families than anything else — the sending mechanics are covered properly in the main WhatsApp invitation guide, including how to batch a 200-person list without tripping spam detection.

Reminders and RSVPs

Roka guest counts matter more than wedding counts, oddly — it's usually catered per plate at a house or small banquet, so a thirty-person swing is a real problem.

Send one reminder four days out and one on the morning of. In the reminder, ask a closed question:

Quick check for the caterer — how many from your side coming for the roka on Saturday? 🙏 Just reply with a number.

"Just reply with a number" doubles your response rate compared to "please confirm." People answer questions; they ignore requests.

The elders you invited by phone rather than message usually get sweets delivered alongside the invite, and that's still the part that buys you goodwill. Mithai gift boxes with separate compartments are worth buying empty and filling from your own halwai — the pre-filled boxes cost roughly double for sweets nobody in the family actually rates. If you're collecting for more than sixty people, counting replies across sixty separate chats stops being funny by about hour two — that's the point where attaching an RSVP to the invite link saves you an evening, since every yes lands in one list instead of scattered across your DMs.

Small thing that saves an argument: before you send anything, screenshot the final message and show it to whichever parent is most likely to object. Two minutes now, versus a "you didn't put Chachaji's name" conversation later.

Only if your family treats them as the same function. If both are happening separately, use distinct wording and mention the other date in the first message — otherwise people assume they've been invited to only one and plan accordingly.
Both, to their own lists. Traditionally the hosting family's name goes on the message; a joint line ("with the blessings of both families") works when it's a shared function.
Send both — image plus the date, time and address as text underneath. Images get compressed and get lost; nobody scrolls back through 400 gallery photos to find a venue at 10 AM.
Ten days for local guests, three weeks if people are flying. Below a week, call the important guests instead of messaging — a phone call absorbs short notice in a way a text can't.
