Here's an opinion that will save you three weeks of chasing: "RSVP" followed by a phone number is the worst-performing four letters on any invitation.

It asks a guest to remember something, decide something, find their phone, call a person they may not know, and have a conversation. Five steps. Every one of them is a place to give up. Then you spend the last fortnight before your event sending messages that begin "sorry to bother you again."

The anatomy of RSVP wording that works

Four ingredients. Miss any of them and your response rate drops.

1. A verb. "Kindly reply," "Please let us know," "RSVP by." Not the naked acronym.
2. A date. A specific one. "RSVP soon" produces replies at roughly the rate of no instruction at all.
3. One method. One. Three contact numbers means three separate lists that you'll reconcile at midnight, and at least one guest counted twice.
4. A reason, when it helps. "So we can confirm numbers with the caterer" converts noticeably better than a bare instruction. People respond to a person, not a rule.

Two notes. The British spelling "favour" is the traditional form and signals a formal register — use it or don't, but be consistent. And if you print a reply-by date, make sure it's genuinely the date you need answers, not a padded one. Guests reply on the deadline, universally, so the deadline is your answer date.

That last line is quietly ruthless and it works extremely well. It converts silence from an ambiguity into a decision, which means fence-sitters actually reply.

Casual party, birthday and dinner wording

Let us know by the 8th so we know how much food to buy.

RSVP by 8 March — tap the link, takes ten seconds.

Yes or no by Sunday please! Either is fine, I just need a number.

Hit reply by the 8th. I'm doing a headcount for the pizza.

Reply by 8 March · [link] · Bringing anyone? Let us know in the form.

Please RSVP by 8 March. If you're a maybe, say maybe — it's more useful than nothing.

Casual events tolerate — and honestly reward — plain speech. "So I know how much food to buy" is a real reason and people respond to real reasons.

Special-case wording

Adults only:

Kindly reply by 12 September. As much as we love your little ones, this will be an adults-only celebration.

Plus-ones not offered:

Kindly reply by 12 September. We've reserved [number] seat(s) in your honour.

Putting the number on the card does the work for you. It's specific, it's not a lecture, and it removes the question before it's asked.

Regrets only (large casual events):

Regrets only by 8 March — if we don't hear from you, we'll see you there.

Meal choice:

Kindly reply by 12 September and let us know your menu preference: chicken · fish · vegetarian

Multi-day / Indian functions:

Kindly confirm by 5 November, and let us know which functions you'll be joining us for: Mehendi · Sangeet · Wedding · Reception

That last one is worth its weight in catering costs. Multi-function guest counts vary wildly per event, and almost nobody asks.

Dietary requirements:

Kindly reply by 12 September. Do tell us about any allergies or dietary needs — we'd rather know now than on the night.

What to avoid, plainly

That last row is worth dwelling on if you're going the printed route. If you're sending physical reply cards, they need to come back pre-addressed and pre-stamped — that's the whole convention. A pack of self-adhesive stamps and a decent return-address stamp costs less than the coffee you'll drink while addressing eighty envelopes, and the address stamp genuinely saves an evening of handwriting.
